The case was pending for over two years and eventually collapsed
The Pechersk District Court of Kyiv released the accused of hooliganism from criminal liability “due to the expiration of the statute of limitations”. This was reported by “Glavkom” with reference to the court register.
According to the case materials, in May 2023, a conflict broke out between the accused, who was driving a Mercedes, and the victim, a Toyota driver, on Evgena Kovpaka Street, 17 in Kyiv. The woman asked the man to move his car, as it was obstructing the free passage of other vehicles. The accused refused.
When the lawyer got out of the car and headed towards the building, the Toyota driver approached him and repeated her request. This time, the accused swore at her and hit her three times on the head with a Louis Vuitton branded bag.
Additionally, the man noticed an Apple iPhone 14 mobile phone in the victim’s hands, with which she was recording the hooligan act. He snatched it and threw it on the asphalt. As a result, the device was damaged.
In a court hearing held at the end of May 2026, the defense counsel for the accused filed a motion to release his client from criminal liability. The reason is that more than three years have passed since the hooligan prank, which allows Themis to release the person from punishment and close the case.
In court, the prosecutor did not object to the defense’s motion. At the same time, the victim and her lawyer opposed: both complained that Themis had not ensured a timely review of the case and had not issued a verdict.
In his conclusions, the judge explained that hooliganism falls under the category of criminal offenses. A person is released from criminal liability if the statute of limitations has expired from the date of commission of the criminal offense until the date the verdict enters into legal force. In this case, it is three years.
“The court repeatedly raised the issue with the accused, considering his denial of guilt, about continuing the proceedings with the issuance of a certain verdict, however, the accused categorically refused to continue the court hearing and insisted on his release from criminal liability,” the ruling states.
It should be added that the accused has held a license for legal practice since 1994.
As “Glavkom” reported, in the Shevchenkivskyi district of the capital, near one of the residential complexes, law enforcement officers detained a man who, while intoxicated, committed hooligan acts and injured a child.
In the Dniprovskyi district of Kyiv, a domestic conflict between former cohabitants ended in a bloody massacre. A man who came to help the woman received five stab wounds to the torso. The incident occurred in the entrance of a residential building on Ostafiya Dashkevycha Street. A quarrel broke out between a local resident and her former common-law husband over unresolved issues in their relationship. In the heat of the conflict, the Kyiv resident called her 41-year-old acquaintance, who was nearby, and asked him to protect her.
